Fall Gardening
Fall Garden Planning
I get it. IT’S HOT. This summer has brought more triple digit temperatures than I can remember. We have wrapped up our summer garden season and are patiently waiting for the fall. This is the perfect time to start thinking about your fall plan. Will you want tulips? What about a fall vegetable garden? Perhaps some cut flowers. Will you want fall planters? Do you want to create a new garden space? These are the perfect questions to get the wheels turning.
Let’s start with tulips. Nothing says welcome to spring like rows of tall colorful tulips. This beloved flower takes some time. In order for a tulip to be successful it needs a long period of cool temperatures and enough time to establish strong roots in order to produce blooms for the spring. It’s important to get the bulbs in the ground before the ground freezes. The same rules apply for other bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, and alliums. Each bulb has specific planting depths, but prefer to be planted in the fall.
Did your summer vegetable garden flop? Now is the perfect time to start over. Plant a fall garden! This is the best way to extend your gardening season. You can start sowing seeds now for vegetable production once the temperatures begin to cool. The cooler temperatures have fewer pests and your plants will hold moisture longer—less watering! Some cool season crops can handle light freezes. Here are a few of our favorites—arugula, beets, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, garlic, Kale, onions, peas radishes, and spinach. Our favorite seed source is Johnny’s Seeds.
Spring gets a lot of credit for the start of planting season, but the fall can be just as rewarding. Maybe you want to create a new flower bed or outdoor space you didn’t get to this summer. Now is a great time to plan for a fall landscape install. We can add trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals to new or existing beds. Annual flowers for fall include pansies, mums, ornamental cabbages and kales.
